Top Questions Homeowners Should Ask Before Any Paving Project

About to Pave Your Driveway? WAIT! Ask These Questions First

August 14, 20253 min read

After two decades in asphalt, you start to see the patterns. At BlakRoc, we’ve been at this long enough to know that the best asphalt work isn’t about what happens on paving day. It’s about everything before and after: how you plan, how you install, how you maintain, and whether you take the time to do it right.

So, what have 20 years in asphalt really taught us? The secret to long-lasting, good-looking pavement can be boiled down to four essentials: patience, planning, drainage, and maintenance.

Patience: Don’t Rush the Process

Asphalt takes time to settle, cure, and reach its full strength. If you rush through a job, by paving in poor weather, skipping compaction, or sealing too soon, you’ll pay for it later.

The pavement may look fine on day one, but rushed jobs start to show wear far too early: ruts, cracking, soft spots. That’s why we approach every job with long-term quality in mind. We want your pavement to last, not just look good for a season.

Paving your driveway is a big investment and one that should last for decades when done right. But not all paving jobs are created equal. If you want to avoid early cracks, drainage issues, or full-on replacement within just a few years, you need to ask a few key questions before the first truck rolls in.

Here are the top questions homeowners should ask before any residential asphalt paving project:

1. WHAT'S THE BASE GOING TO LOOK LIKE?

Before any asphalt is laid, the groundwork has to be done—literally. A strong, well-prepared base is more important than the top layer of asphalt. Why? Because a driveway is only as strong as the foundation it sits on.

Ask your contractor how they plan to handle grading, compaction, and drainage. These aren’t extras—they’re essentials. The base should be compacted, properly sloped for drainage, and made of quality aggregate material that supports the asphalt above it.

If you skip this step or cut corners here, even the best asphalt won’t last.

2. WHAT TYPE OF ASPHALT MIX ARE YOU USING?

Not all asphalt is created equal. The mix used should match the needs of your property and the regional climate. For example, high-traffic areas or places that experience extreme temperatures need a different formulation than low-traffic, temperate zones.

Make sure your contractor can explain the type of asphalt mix they’ll be using and why it’s appropriate for your specific situation. If they’re vague or unsure, it’s a red flag.

Choosing the right asphalt mix can improve durability, resistance to cracking, and long-term appearance.

3. HOW THICK WILL THE ASPHALT BE?

Thickness matters—more than you might think. For most residential driveways, you should expect 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt after installation. Anything less may not provide enough strength to support the weight of your vehicles over time.

Keep in mind that’s compacted thickness. If your contractor says they’ll lay 2 inches of asphalt, but they don’t mention compaction, the final thickness might end up much lower than you need.

Always ask: How thick will the asphalt be after compaction?

Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget About Maintenance

Even a perfectly paved driveway needs care to reach its full lifespan. Ask about future maintenance recommendations like crack sealing, rejuvenation, and regular cleaning. A good contractor won’t just focus on install day. They’ll help you understand how to keep your driveway looking great for years to come.
